To answer your question;

The early summer of 2002, I was finishing my Carryall. I wanted to take it to the Iowa Rally. I had no time to mount and set up hydroboost so I went to Iowa with 4 wheel disk only. I trailered the Carryall. Even before I left for Iowa, I knew the brakes were not the best. Driving around Iowa, I had a concern on EMERGENCY stopping ability. I drove slow around Fairfield. I feared a kid would run out in front of me. The truck stopped fine in normal conditions. But I think we all have that emergency in mind when we need full brake power. As soon as I got home, I added the hydroboost booster. That have me brakes equal to my Ram 2500.

See if you can find any Detroit production line car or truck made today without a power booster of some type. If Detroit felt they were not needed, it sure would be missing to save money or an option. Your leg and the geometry of the brake pedal can only apply just so much push pressure. The power booster amplifies your leg push input many times. After my experience with my Carryall, I would not even waste my time building my other trucks without power booster.

Your millage may vary

Paul
