Norm. I goofed! I missed the occasional spark when off comment. I think the old girl has separate start and run circuits so I second the motion to bypass the ignition switch and wire the hot side of the coil to the battery. The ignition switch will control only the starter. I'd use an alligator clip jumper wire that you can remove in a hurry if things go bad and remember to remove existing coil feed. The old ignition switch could be pooched. Smoking ballast resister thats odd. It sounds like you had the resister wired directly accross the battery If the ignition switch was on could be internal short in switch. That ballast resister isn't all that important mine blew up and I replaced it with a piece of wire hanging loose under the trailer hitch. Got me the next 40 miles home.
