Shop around and you'll find that 1/4 turn valves are about as cheap as valves with seats and washers these days. My problem is I have dozens of old washer-type valves and feel like I ought to make use of them, but the 1/4 turn ones are so much better that I find I'm using them even in my regular plumbing system. With washer-type valves that are left open in the line for years, often as not when you go to use them, the washer has deteriorated and they don't shut off, or once you turn the handle, the packing starts leaking. I have nothing but ball valves in my air lines, and I have lots of them because I have one at each outlet. I think I got a good deal on them somewhere, just before the price of copper shot up, but if you have to buy new, you'll find the washer-type valves are just as expensive these days. Plus, the 1/4 turn feature is really convenient for quick opening and closing.
