Hi Norm,

Is that little brother yours or are you working on it for someone?

Ok, you still have a short and it's probably the points.

- Disconnect the wire from the regulator that goes to the ampmeter or ignition switch to eliminate the charging circuit.

- Disconnect the wire that goes from the solonoid to the ignition switch to eliminate the ignition circuit

- Disconnect the wire from the ignition switch that goes to the coil.

- You didn't mention if it's 6V or 12V, but disconnect the ballast resister if used.

TESTING

- rotate the engine until the points are closed

- Depending if it's positive or negative ground system, run a wire from the appropriate battery terminal to the coil.

- take the coil lead out of the cap and hold it a quarter inch from a ground - engine block, but sure you are insulated from the lead.

- open the points with a screw driver w/o grounding the screw driver, do not rotate engine, you should get a spark.

- if no spark, check the wire to the points for a short and make sure you have current.

- take out the points and take apart the wire/point terminal to check insulation material. This is where most shorts occur.

This may not exact for the electrical system you have, but it should give you an idea of what to check.

Once you get an arc at the lead from opening the points, reconnect everything.
