You said, "no spark at points until the key is turned off then it sparks like crazy." If you mean that there's no spark while cranking but then sparks when you release the key from the cranking position, that's a clue that the battery is weak or some part of the ignition system is weak. I've known vehicles that wouldn't catch while cranking, but the moment you let off from the "start" position, it would often catch and start running. The problem is the starter drags the voltage down too low to get a spark, possibly because of some other weakness in the system, but if the engine is still spinning fast enough from inertia, when you go from the "start" to "run" position, it will sometimes catch.
