The overdrive is activated with a switch mounted on the shifter, just under the knob. IT powers a solenoid at the overdrive that turns it on and off. I flip the switch when I get to around 2200 rpm in 4th.
One other thing, with the overdrive you get gear splits. For example going up a slight hill in 4th is difficult in 4th gear with a stock engine. I can flip the over drive on in third gear, and it works well.
