I like everybody else's advice so far. All I know is there are people who follow all the rules, which mostly involve paperwork and money, and it's worth it to them, and there are people who ignore the rules and manage to get away with it. Maybe if I was 80 years old and the doctor told me I only had 6 months to live, I'd drill that one extra hole in the receiver of a semi-auto AK-47, put the full-auto fire control group back in, and see how long it took me to blow through all my ammo. When you get close enough to the end of your life, you tend to not really give a damn what regulations say. For the younger healthier guys, I guess it's worth the money just to be able to say, "Hey, want to come over and shoot my machine gun?" I can't see it myself, but to each his own.

For now, if I had the money it takes to buy and register a legal machine gun, I'd by a semi-auto unregistered M2HB. I'd rather shoot a few big bullets a long way, than a lot of small bullets quickly. If you just want to spray bullets and enjoy the machine gun sound, Google "bump fire" and "Gatling gun". There's even an outfit making a sliding AR stock now that supposedly lets you bump fire an AR-15 while holding it in the conventional shoulder position and aiming. It's a ridiculous amount of money for a simple piece of plastic, but it comes with an ATF approval letter that says it's legal because it has no springs in it.
