True, but if you have an alternator and/or a solid-state regulator, the neutrons and gamma rays can ruin the diodes and transistors. So, stick with the old DC generator and mechanical regulator. The ultimate nuclear war survival rig would have an all-mechanical diesel engine with no electronic controls. You can drive an M35 with no batteries if you can push-start it. I drove three of them from Ft Lewis to South Seattle that way. Just hoped they didn't stall out on I-5. Of course the catch is that even if non-electronic engines are immune to radiation bursts, humans aren't. You might drive away from the blast, but in a week you're dead anyway. Best way to survive is live out in the boonies in Idaho! Bo Gritz used to have a survivalist outfit out around Kamiah somewhere, but I heard he sold out and moved to Palm Springs a few years back. I guess he got tired of shoveling snow while waiting for civilization to collapse.
