Especially if you use the 12v with solenoid. That way you can use the extra contact on the solenoid to get 12v to the coil, around the ballast, for starting. Or, some of the mechanical switches on the starter have a small screw on the side that would do the same thing, but it would need a diode, about 25¢ at Radio Shack. Or just ignore the whole 12v-at-start concept, that usually works just fine too. See, the 6v starter draws so few amps on 12v that the voltage drops very little when cranking compared to either the 6v starter on 6v, or using a 12v starter on 12v.

Now I may be complicating things needlessly, but if you have poor points life, it may be due to a bad match between coil and condenser. Check the worn points to see which side the build up of tungsten transfer is on. One side or the other will mean condenser needs to be bigger, or smaller. We'll have to look up which...
