I am glad you wrote this. You bring up a lot of points I had not even thought of. Of course you have been around these trucks a lot longer than me or most of the rest of us.
There must have been some reason why Dodge designated the different years with different model numbers (See Home Page: "Model Year Detail"). The trucks have evolved through the years, and were given different model names, which information Joe has clearly provided.
Of course not all of our trucks have come to us in complete, original condition. But if I build a flatbed for my WDX, because I don't have the original bed, or if I buy parts from Matt to put a bed together, it still doesn't mean my truck is no longer a WDX. And if someone installs a 318 or a Cummmins 4BT in a '55 it's still a C3.
Why didn't Dodge call these trucks Flat Fenders?
