I don't think he said what kind of truck he has. The old ones didn't use relays. M37s don't have relays. All the current goes though the headlight switch and through the dimmer switch, which is in a perfect place to get road dirt, salt, and water thrown up on it, especially if the metal piece that's supposed to somewhat protect it is gone. I would be amazed if your WDX had relays when it was built, but Paul is right that it's good to add them, if only so you can use lighter-gauge wire behind the dash and make life easier for the switches. When I re-wired the sno-cats, I didn't use relays, except for one master shut-off, but it has no hi/lo dimmer and I had a bunch of good sealed mil-spec toggle switches of adequate current rating on hand.
