Did you have to heat the carrier to nearly red hot to remove the cap or did it come apart fairly easily? My take is that the carrier cap should be so tight the pins really aren't even necassary. I talked to Bob at Veteran Vehicles and I think he tightens them to something like 1200 ft-lbs (200lbs hanging on a 6ft bar) maybe not quite that high but you get the idea. Also they should be an interference fit hence the need to heat. If 1200 ft-lbs of torque and an interference fit won't hold the cap tight 3 - 1/4" pins aren't going to do a thing. Of couse I am not really sure why there would be any significant torque between the cap and the carrier, the ring gear and the center pins are in the main body the loading on the cap would be a thrust load trying to push it out not unscrew it. Maybe if the side gear somehow bound in the end cap and you have an open diff there would some torque on the cap when turning? Sorry for rambling and I hope this makes sense, I have only taken two carriers apart and one was so tight I nearly gave up and the other came apart without heat and barely a tap with a punch and neither had any broken pins.
