Yep, I always take snow shoes and survival gear. Never had to use it yet, but I read "To Build a Fire" when I was a boy and it made a big impression on me.

Snow fall is always really erratic. It depends on which way the wind happens to be blowing and a couple degrees temp difference one way or the other makes all the difference in snow. A couple years ago when Coeur d'Alene and Spokane got record snow falls and roofs collapsed, we hardly got any. That day when it snowed 4 feet in Cd'A it only snowed a foot here, the year before that we had 6 feet in town, and 4-5 feet on the ground for most of the winter. Even the old timers said that was a lot, but even the old timers weren't around when an avalanche took out the S-bridge on the railroad above Mullan and another avalanche buried the town of Black Bear up Burke. I'd rather take the vagaries of snow around here than fire. We haven't had a bad fire season since I've lived here, but we'll get one eventually.
