Sounds like a defroster/heater much like the Model A Fords used. The exhaust manifold had a piece of sheetmetal covering it, that extended into the passenger cabin where it just dumped heated air from around the manifold into the cabin. I heard there was a Model A option that mounted a electric fan somewhere in that contraption to blow the heated air.
