That's why I like my charger that is nothing more than a variac, a current and voltage meter, and a rectifier. It doesn't attempt to outsmart me. I can put it on any batter in any condition and adjust the voltage (0 to 72 volts) until it starts to draw current, and then as it settles down, dial it down to 5 amps or so and let it charge nice and gentle for a day or two. A truly adjustable charger is better than an "automatic" one any day.
