I swear by the maintainers.
With a maintainer, I got 8 years out of my first 6 volt conventional battery in the power wagon, and it still would crank the engine when I replaced it this past fall. All the batteries except for my daily driver vehicles are on maintainers. My farm tractor (diesel) battery is about 6 years old with a maintainer's use.
