Hi Steve,
The early beds have the spare tire mounted in the bed, late ones on the drivers door. I rebuilt the head board from two rotted ones, an early and a late. I used the top rail of the early one, which had the holes for the spare tire mount. The spare tire bracket also bolts to the floor, which required 2 holes with weld nuts to be located an installed. These end up in right over the front channel cross piece, so there would have ben no way to get a nut on the bolts if I had forgotten those! I replaced the entire panel, up to the top edge and welded the top rail from the old one to the new panel. The center rib from the newer type was better so I used that. Also there is a small jump seat on the head board in the early ones that isnt there on the later ones. I had to locate and weld in 4 nuts to accept the seat. The newer beds troop seat on the passenger side goes all the way to the front (no spare tire) and the older ones it stops back about a foot and a half. The mounting channel and hole backing plate needed to be removed and relocated to allow the shorter bench.
I dont think the tool box doors had the lock tabs on the early beds but I left them on anyway.
So now you know more than you probably wanted to know about the differences between an early and late M37 beds!
Tim
