Timing light question

Would a 12 volt timing light work on a 24 volt system if the timing light was powered by its own 12 volt battery? Not sure what the inductive pickup that encircles the plug wire does, would it still function? I realize I would need to make an adapter with a section of regular plug wire for the pickup.
