The link below is a document from 1963 comparing the M37 to a Diesel FC170. Much of the selling points of the Jeep were increased fuel mileage. Maybe if Dodge had pitched a Diesel version of the M37, it would have continued?

I happen to have an FC170 for sale if anyone is convinced by this document that they want to replace their m37.
