The culprtit is the phosphorus, the 'P' in ZDDP

But the zinc, while good for wear, is also high friction. Which could be why the additives are used in limited slip differentials.

And the phosphorus is what makes the cats put out sulphuric acid fumes.

So, cut the phosphorus to save the cats, cut the zinc to save gas mileage.

Best info I come up with for ZDDP replacement is "techrobond".

And, that the problematic engines are high performance flat tappet engines, with high valve spring pressure, like race springs. Which leaves flat heads out.
