Metals are really bad for cats. And, as egines wear and use more oil, the metals from the oil wreck the cats. Mostly, the babbit from the crank bearings. Lead and tin, plus others.

And Chevvies always had a problem with cam/lifter wear. They were the first to come out with factory roller lifters because of it.

Flat heads have low lift, no rocker arm ratio, and wimpy valve spring pressure. So not a problem there.

Otherwise, cams used to come with a tube of moly grease as a break in lube. And, new cams were coated with something, probably nitrided as that was an option with re-finishig.

So, a pre-cat engine, add whatever. Cat'ed engines, be more careful.
