I have been using 85w/140 conventional gear oil in all my gearboxes for years now. I got half a dozen buckets from army surplus at one point, and then a full 55 gallon barrel at a yard sale. Honestly, it's too thick. I'm sure it does a fine job of lubricating, but starting out on a cold morning I can definitely tell I've got some heavy oil in there. I have so much I'm using it in my chainsaw too. I would go with 80w/90 if I was buying new. But since you already have the 140, the only harm in using it is a little bit worse fuel economy.
