I know the New Mexico plates well. Bill Jewel came up from New Mexico and stayed for awhile. We were driving around and went to a big swap meet. While driving I kept noticing people giving us dirty looks and staring...More than I normally get ;).
Stopped at a gas station and the same thing. People noticeably staring as we moved about, especially older people. After a few days I finally realized why. Here in Ohio they issue "special" plates for convicted DUI drivers and those plates are exactly what New Mexico plates look like. Your only supposed to drive to and from work and I suppose going to a car/truck swap meet wouldn't sit well with some. Still laugh about that one. People were looking at the color and not the words.
