Chris,
Your typical modern car or truck has a full flow oil filter. This means all of the oil needs to flow through it and therefore the filtering is limited so that the engine is not starved for oil.
A bypass filter filters only part of the oil that flows, but filters much more thoroughly. Typically a full flow filter will only filter down to about 7 microns (u). A byppass filters down to 2 u. Oilcoming from a bypass filter typically appears as though it just came out of the oil container, whereas in a full flow you can tell there are still contaminants...
