Rough, or grooved?

I'd put grooves towards the gear. Grooves are there to spread the oil, that surface is the one you want the sliding to taker place.

Rough I'd guess to the case, to grip it so the sliding takes place between gear and washer.

Point being, you want the wear to take place on the replaceable part, not the case.

But I've never been into one of these diffs.
