I like the flatbeds that do not have side boards all the way out to the sides. When they are set back 8 to 12 inches, this gives a place to stand while working with loads and also a place to carry tools and chainsaws. Kind of like "running boards" at bed leve.

I like your idea of notching the bedside. If you mount the spare on one of the early cast, frame mounted, spare tire mounts, this would work perfect. (This mount is also correct for '51 and later trucks that were ordered as a cab/chassis). You could add a 2-inch or so spacer between the spare mount and the frame. Put your side boards inboard with the passenger side behind the spare. You will still have a 4-1/2 to 5-foot wide cargo space with the "running boards" outside the side boards to mount and carry your tools, gas cans, chainsaws, etc.
