I guess I wouldn't section anything, but stow it in the stock location inside a side rail. That way you still have use of the full bed by moving the spare. Build a mount though?

I put a hydraulic lift gate on my daily driver Ford. No room underneath any more, so the spare is strapped to the back of the cab. Gets in the away when hauling ply wood sheets, so off to the side would be better. Plus, somebody cut the strap and stole one, so a built in lockable/chainable mount to one side sounds better to me.

Maybe a diagonal brace for the head board, clamp spare there?
