I have my dad's 1950s Sears Craftsman table saw, still running smooth and cool on its original 1 HP motor. Those were real HP. Wired for 240, it doesn't slow down even if I'm ripping 2x4s. At some point when I was young and foolish I bought a Sears "1 HP" electric weed eater. Its motor was about 1/4 the size of that on the table saw. It ate weeds for a year or two and then pulled the Cheech & Chong routine (up in smoke). Actually, come to think of it, the "2.4 HP" Sears vacuum cleaner is the only modern Sears product I have that hasn't burned up its motor, possibly because it only really puts out 1/4 HP or so. Electric drill? Burned up. Circular saw? Burned up. Shop vac? Burned up spectacularly. I've had so many Sears electric products burn up that I suspect they were all designed by Lucas. But hey, I'm sure their 6 volt quick starter is fine. At least it doesn't have a motor in it.
