I just built a 40x40 pole barn, for steers now, trucks later.
The holes were 20 inches deep, and 12-14 across.
I tamped the dirt around the bottom of the poles, while holding a level to get them into place, set the corners first, then use string high and low to set the poles in between, tied between your corner posts.
I set them according to the string, check with a level, then eyeball it.
We measured across "X" when we were done, had 1/4 inch difference between opposing corner posts. I did have a friend help me on this one, but have done it alone on my 40x40 shop.
