I know it used to be fairly common to put 8-volt batteries in 6-volt tractors, expecially back in the 70's and 80's when these tractors were about worn out but still being used regularly for chore tractors. I can see the point of doing that. They were only a chore tractor, but still needed to be used everyday. It did not make a lot of sense to spend a lot of money or time on them. And, at best, they were lucky to have two light bulbs and maybe two illuminated guages. If these burnt out, well the old chore tractor seldom needed to be used at night anyway.

I guess this is where I get the idea that the 8-volt battery is a bandaid fix.
