The figure I have always heard is that bulb life is inversely proportional to the 4th power of the voltage. I don't know if that's true or not, but there's definitely a very steep decline in lifetime with higher voltage. If the 4th power rule is true, going from 6.3V to 8.4V (nominal) cuts the lifetime down to about 1/3 of what it would be at 6 volts. Perhaps the compensating factor is that you never get anything like full voltage at the bulb in a 6V truck due to inadequate wiring. I've never tried the 8 volt routine myself, so I'm just assuming it must work okay in a lot of cases because lots of guys do it.
