I believe one of the main variables is who is the seller. Resellers and dealers clearly need to make a profit for all their efforts in finding these old truck and they supply many services that the old farmer fails to supply. Often, they get a non-running truck running again or find and supply missing parts. But from my experiences, that adds a couple of thousand to the price, which is ok for a new buyer or a person without the time to run around the back hills looking in all the funny places we have learned to look. My best "deal" is a rust free truck from the Rockies, perfect cab and frame, winch etc, but a flat bed and it did not run for $600. On the other hand, I bought a M601 sheet metal that was never used for $3,500, and all I got was a frame and sheet metal. But for me, the middleman did what I could never have done, and that was to locate and transport to his place of business a very rare piece of Dodge history. We need to understand the services supplied by middlemen and be willing to pay a premium price for the time and effort they save. It is not fair to compare prices of resale trucks with "barn" trucks, unless you have the time to spend looking. And it is not just time. On my "cheap" $600 dollar truck, I spent $1000 to pick it up and three days of my time to bring it to California.
