auto trans

I'm looking at a 74 wagon with a 727 trans. I've never owned an auto, and the fella says this one needs a little work. It doesn't want to shift well and has trouble going from forward to reverse. I know almost nothing about automatics and was wondering how much work would this mean. It sounds like a linkage problem to me. Anyone out there have any advice? Thanks for your time.
