How do you measure/check spline wear ?

What metrics do you use for measuring spline wear on axle and propeller shafts? The service manual does not list any specs, nor methods for measuring. None of my reference manuals (Stockel, Chiltons, Clymer) list any information. Thanks for any help you can provide.
