I can't say for sure what some manufacturers might have tried but NO,the front and rear should be the same.Labels, tags, and operating specs generally have always said,DO NOT OPERATE ON PAVEMENT IN 4WD due to the tendency to develope drivetrain windup which is no problem off road because the wheels can slip to relieve opposing stress.Offroad conditions don't necessarily compensate for two diff.gear ratios and that is why most 4x4s have the same gear ratio in the front and rear. I have seen young nuts driving around in modern 4x4 PUs using stock tires in the front and oversized tall ones in the rear which will cause alot of stress on the drivetrain in 4x4.This would be acceptable if the calculations were done and the correct alternant gear ratios used as in the case of some 4x4 backhoes w/smaller front tires. Generally though, they are the same in most 4x4s.
