At 55 mph, an M37 with 9.00x16 tires and 5.83 gears will need an engine RPM of 3400. This is waaay too much for the old flathead, which should be restricted to about 2800 rpm max sustained. But 3400 rpm sustained is no sweat to a 318 or any modern V-8 in good condition. I ran a 428 Cobra Jet to work daily at a sustained 3500 rpm at freeway speeds for years. I'm sticking with the stock gearing and, for now, stock NDT's.

Gil Hughley had a nice tire size vs gear vs rpm chart on his website. I tried to open up his website to make a link to his chart, but I cannot get his site to open. It is a chart well worth printing out. Hopefully it is only temporarily down.

Anyway, the only drawback is the definite increase in transfer case whine. You won't be able to hear your wife talk very well, but in my case that's a plus.
