I used to be real excited that the so-called combat rims, aka run flat rims, could be run with flat tires and not have them shucked off the rim. Not so, as the combat rim was designed to allow a steel band to go inside that pressed against both beads and locked them into place against the rims. I don't know of anyone who still have these steel lock bands.

Therefore, the difference becomes merely one of looks and practicality. Combat rims look cool. But (this size anyway) they are original only to the Dodge 3/4 ton 4x4 and the 1 1/2 ton 6x6. The 1/2 tonners and M37 used different rims. I have them on my M37, and they look cool, but agian, not original.

I also have a hard time finding shops which will deal with split rings (the correct term for the 1/2 ton and M37/PW rims, not split rim). So I can replace the tires myself. That can be a big plus.

The combat rims are much tougher to balance. I would suggest that if you have a set with the tires off, you get it neutral balanced and index the ring (mark it so it goes on the same way). This will help.
