Joe,
I have a Sears 4 1/2" grinder with 5/8" arbor. (It's my favorite tool I don't know how I'd get along without it.)
The 1/16" wheels cut good but with Sear's setup you can only use the wheel down to about 3 1/4".
You can make an adapter that will allow you to use the wheels down to less than 2" diameter. All you need are (3) 1/2" flat washers. The ones I used are approx 1 5/8" OD.
First step is to take (1) washer and drill it out to 5/8" so it is a good fit on the grinder.
Then take the other (2) washers and drill them out to 1" diameter.
Note that the 5/8" hole needs to be drilled accurate but if you don't have access to a 1" drill bit you can cut them out with a round grindstone on a drill or whatever, just so you have at least a 1" opening.
The final step is to take the 3 washers and stack them up with the 5/8" hole on top.
Tack weld the 3 washers together around the OD of the washers.
I welded them at 4 places 90 degrees apart. Now you can use this to replace the 3" diameter Sears domed washer that goes on first before the wheel.
Sometimes you need a bigger diameter wheel to get accesss to a tight spot. Whenever I am going to cut something I always start with the smallest diameter wheel in my toolbox to get the most use out of the wheels.
