I had the frame of my 1940 VD-21 sand blasted, then painted with 2-part epoxy industrial primer, then overcoated with 2-part polyurethane industrial primer, then overcoated with 2-part polyurethane industrial paint. This was very expensive, but should last for several human lifetimes. The polyurethane is the same stuff that is used in tanks that hold acids and caustics.
