It will usually depend on the size of memory card you buy to go with the camera and then what resolution you set the camera to film at. You should read the specs on the camera and then buy the appropriate memory card to fit your needs. If what you are wanting to film will be in the dark it could be tough to capture. It takes a really high $ camera to film at night.

With that said if you are wanting to get video or photos of someone to prosecute via the law then you will need to spend a lot of $$$. Lots of cameras will clearly show whats going on but not be good enough to show an actual face of a person. A good slimeball lawyer will get someone off the hook really fast if there is doubt about the face in the video or picture.
