One other problem that I found with my sender. The winding are on a cone shaped piece that is inside of a metal case. The contact runs up and down this cone. My gauge did not work except on rare occasion. I worked on the ground and etc with no glory. I took the sender out of the tank several times and took the cover off and it worked ok. I looked at the inside of the cover onetime and noticed that it had a shinny spot on the end of it. I realized that the top of the cone post was toughing the cover which is grounded. I looked further and the cone is mounted to a small tab. I pushed the cone down which bent the tab a little. Now it works great. The cone normally points downward when installed in the tank. The best I can figure out is that the cone bent the tab downward through the years of vibration from driving. It finally shorted to to its case. You could see a good bend in the tab. No that it is back in position I should be good for another 40 or 50 years.
