guys in the rat rod world rub rusted metal with motor oil. keeps the flash rust down and keeps the crusty look. try it on a panel and let it weather. saw a hotrod with untreated metal. guy wiped it down with a rag and kept it garaged. i think he did it to show off his welding and leading skills. too much work for me. i'd love to get a wilbur type truck and restore the engine, frame, wheels, runningboards and drivetrain. put the faded sheetmetal back on frame. run on the concept that as each component needed attention, it was brought back to spec. i like the contrast of new wood and stainless strips in a surface rust covered bed. new tires and freshly painted rims on a used vehicle. shows you care about your truck and your effort to preserve its history.
