Yes, I've done some stick welding before, it is tricky.
My MIG is rated to 5/16", so it's close to big enough, but even the manual talks about correct prep and possibly using multiple passes at that thickness. So technique plays a bigger role, and I'm not bad, but that's not the same as being good.
For the piece of mind it's probably worth the cost to just take it to a shop. Shouldn't be too hard for someone who knows what they're doing.
