I'm not sure about the oldest ones with the smaller metal and glass tail lights, but as far as I'm aware they all use the M-series standard wiring scheme with a bright 1683 bulb for the brake and turn signal and a dimmer 1251 for the tail lights. Tail lights are on constantly in the service drive position. There is a separate circuit for the blackout tail lights using its own 1251 bulb. Turn signals were an add-on so they switched the the brake light wires up front but left all the rear wiring the same.

The reason I'm unsure about tail lights on the earliest trucks is that I found out during a discussion with a state trooper that there is no passenger-side tail light on my XM105 trailer. There's nothing in the wiring, or in the light housing to support it, although there are blackout trail lights on both sides. I suspect the early M37s might be the same. Apparently in the early '50s it was okay to just have a tail light on the driver's side, the theory I suppose being that on two-lane roads no one will try to pass you on the right.
