Twelve Volt Question

I have retained the six volt system in my P.W. Starts fine, even in cold weather, see no reason to convert...However, the time may come when I will need a 'jump'. As I believe the only thing in jeopardy when jumping with 12 volts is the fuel guage, what are some thoughts on installing a simple on-off toggle switch in the feed to the guage to be used on such occassions?
Also, anyone have any experience with simply 'tweaking' the voltage regulator and changing over to an eight volt battery?
