So if it was 8 lug on a mid 40s truck, something has been swapped.

The WWII Dodge 4wd Military trucks came as 5 lug, with at least three different bolt patterns.

The only one of those 4wd WWII Military trucks that got the 2wd style pickup front fenders is the VC series, VC-1 through VC-6.
