He was a gentleman, and a very nice person. I was in uniform at the time, and assigned to an airborne unit. We were at a small veteran's day gathering. I watched him talking with everybody else, and he spoke with the same kindness to each person in the room.

No disrespect to E/506th Veterans, but I disagree that Easy was a one of a kind unit. Unless you want to say each Infantry Company that fought in WWII without surrendering or running to the rear was one of a kind, Easy Company was a good representative unit of WWII. I know and have known personally people from many infantry divisions and regiments- 175th Infantry, 5307th Composite Group, 83rd Infantry Division, 517th PIR. There were a lot of Easy Company's out there, just this one was written about and had a movie made.

I am told that this year is going to be the hardest year for losing WWII veterans. I can tell you that many that I have known have already passed away. I think it is very sad that we are losing them so quickly. In the early 1990's, Time published a special volume about WWII and the soldiers who fought the war. There was one quote in the article which stood out. A mother, who lost her son on D-Day, said the following.

"To others, he was just another name. But to me, he was the crown jewel of the mosaic that is my life."

I have been privileged to know a great number of these men, including members of my family who are now gone. I think of all of them are a jewel in the mosaic that is our life in a free world. Long may their tale be told...
