I agree. I have always honed the bejesus out of them so as not to have to buy new cylinders, but I can never get past the pits and they always leak somewhat. I find the best way to do a lot of honing is to chuck the hone in a drill press and the cylinder in a vise. To keep the hone from clogging up right away, I dribble water through it and put a cup under to catch it. On a master cylinder I plug the outlet and just leave the water in it.
The hone is really only good for cleaning up surface rust, not for smoothing out a pitted bore, though.
