I have often wondered the same thing, especially when I see how well my wife's Honda works in the snow with front wheel drive. I suppose one of the reasons earlier vehicles were not designed as primary front wheel drive is the fact that turning the vehicle tends to cause the well known "hopping" or "crabbing" phenomenon that comes when driving on harder surfaces in four wheel drive. This could be a real problem in our older trucks if we were able to drive around on the front axle only. They have brought this under control in the front wheel drive automobiles, but I don't think my '06 2500 would do very much better driving on the front than my older trucks would.
