A lot of guys use a chunk of the heaviest railroad iron they can find for an anvil. Usually pretty easy to find a piece and might get you by until a real anvil shows up. There's a story around here about the prospector who discovered what became the Sunshine mine on Big Creek. He and his partner worked hard for years driving a little drift in up above where the current mine is, until they hit a vein that looked promising enough to sell. This was back around 1880. Of course they did all their drilling with hand steels that needed to be sharpened and re-tempered regularly. Their "anvil" consisted of a large iron nut. They used that nut the whole time they were mining up there. Eventually they sold the claim and forgot about it. Something like 50 years later, after the Sunshine was a big mine, a man went up to poke around the old drift and found that nut/anvil.
